NEW YORK BLOG: PAULA, A BABY AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES

NEW YORK MARATHON BLOG by RICHARD LEWIS

I have trouble planning my schedule for the next week. Can you imagine what life must be like for Paula Radcliffe?
Breakfast in America is quite a routine on the Friday before the ING New York Marathon.
In the basement of the Hilton Hotel, Radcliffe holds court with a press conference to preview her participation in a race where she could become the second best on the all-time rankings here if she wins tomorrow.
It will be victory No 4 in New York - yet she would still be five behind the legendary Grete Waitz.
But that was not the major issue here this time. Well, not for part of the chat with her anyway.
Radcliffe, of course, wants to win the Olympics in London in 2012. There is no secret in that, particularly after the last two Games where she did not finish in 2004 in Athens and hobbled home in 23rd place in Beijing in 2008.
But she is also hoping to become a mum again. And she would like to do that before 2012, while hoping for nine months to recover properly in time for London.
The laughter grew when she was put on the spot here about when she will have a baby. As one person said: "The time and the hour, please."
As she said: "I don't think I've made it a secret about the fact that I want to fit in having another child somewhere as well before 2012 and there's not a lot of time. You can't plan that either, that 'this' is going to work out like 'this'.
"You have to wait and see how things work out but if I wasn't in the career that I am in I think we would have had another child already. It's just trying to juggle all of these things.
"I did learn lessons afterwards - allowing my body to recover more. I think I can be smarter coming back next time but I think you need to allow a safe nine months, a year afterwards to be safe. You could do it a lot quicker but to be safe for 2012."
I will leave you to work out the mathematics, suffice to say watching Radcliffe run tomorrow morning could be her last marathon for two years.
Me? I am not even sure of the time of my return flight home.
But New York has become her city. Winning tomorrow will be another remarkable achievement for an athlete who has overcome injury once more this year and has not run a marathon since her victory here 12 months ago.
As she said, she puts her body on the line every time she runs, and she looked in such a relaxed mood as she chatted over breakfast.
Derartu Tulu, of Ethiopia, Japan's Yuri Kano and Salina Kosgei of Kenya will provide her main opposition and though it will be tough, Radcliffe should be strong enough.
The course record of 2:22:31 is her aim and while it is more than six years since her World record run of 2:15:25 in London, she is determined that her career is far from finished.
The men’s race lost Martin Lel this week because of injury but my money is on his fellow Kenyan Patrick Makau.
At 24, he is a half-marathon specialist and he was fourth on his marathon debut in Rotterdam in April in 2:06:14.
He could be a rising star of the event.
